MANITOBA (2010) (fragment)

Manitoba is a short film by Mirka Duijn, Nina Spiering and Marieke de Blaay. It has had it's grand premiere at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam.

Manitoba is a short movie about Frank (Raymond Thiry) who washes ashore on a strange island. He seeks refuge in the only pub of a desolate village; cafe Manitoba. Unfortunately the cafe is not the safe haven he had hoped for.

VPRO made an item about Nina & me at the Cannes Festival, 2010:

MIRKASTAN

Mirkastan is a travelogue in real time, a twitter narrative of a journey from Amsterdam to Tokyo via Serbia, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan (sort of), Uzbekistan, and China in the Spring of 2009.

Like the individual frames of a film, a larger story is built by tiny flickers of twittered text, in which each is individually significant, but which combine to create an abstracted moving image of the experience being portrayed.

CHANGE BEATS

Change Beats wants to connect youth from different parts of the world to gain attention for their cause: equal chances for youth across the world. They do so via their common passion, music. In 2010 youngsters from te Netherlands, Tanzania and India met in Delhi to record songs. Frankly Anderson followed them to India and made a bunch of colorfull musicvideos for this talented crowd.

HEADLESS HEROES - JUST LIKE HONEY (2009)

The Silence of Love is a beautiful themed album of covers, dream't up by a chap named Eddie Bezalel, helped and produced by Hugo Nicolson, who pulled together the songs and a bunch of great musicians (Josh Klinghoffer, Woody Jackson, Joey Waronker, Leo Abrahams & Gus Seyffert) to play on it, all topped off with the voice of one Alela Diane. A simply beautiful collection of lost classics and unearthed gems sung with arresting clarity by Nevada City's emerging new folk star Alela.

Tashkurgan, China, 2009

MIRKA DUIJN got her masters degree in Image and Media Technology at the HKU in 2003. She started her career at public broadcasting station VPRO where she won several prizes (a.o. a Silver Spin Award) for her concepts for interactive, digital television programs. Besides her work at the VPRO she has always been working as freelance director and motion designer.

In 2008 she decided to focus on directing and started working with Nina Spiering. The kickstart to their career as a directing duo came with their short film Manitoba, which premiered at the International Filmfestival 2009 in Rotterdam, screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected for the Debut Competition at the Dutch Film Festival.

---

A rich, remarkably stylized visual aesthetic and eye for detail define the work of directing duo Mirka Duijn and Nina Spiering. They seek the beauty that can be found in ugliness, a exploration that's particularly evident in their precise art direction and singular choices of setting. Nina and Mirka create idiosyncratic worlds that seem familiar and unknown at the same time.
